New Years Resolutions

I've never been a New Years Resolutions kind of girl but this year it just feels like a good thing to do. Here are four things I hope will keep me inspired this year:

1) Read all of Jane Austen's novels
I'm kind of ashamed of myself for not doing this before now. I love Pride and Prejudice and Sense and Sensibility, I think I've read Emma. I've started Mansfield Park several times. It's time to read them all! I realized I hadn't when I watched the Jane Austen Book Club movie on the way home from Christmas. Love random inspiration.

2) Entertain once a month
I love having people over and cooking for them. We don't do this enough and I hope that making a tangible goal will remind me to do this and stop putting it off because I'm too busy.

3) Watch one movie from the American Film Institutes Top 100 Movies a month
I've been trying to watch the movies on this list for years. I've watched quite a few but I'm hoping making a goal will help me move more quickly through it. First up, The Graduate.

I hope writing this down this way will help keep me accountable and remind me of my goals. Here's to 2011!

Christmas Cookies

I love making Christmas cookies and decided to try this yummy lemon crisp recipe when I wanted to make cookies for some friends. They turned out light and crisp but with the perfect amount of sweetness. Plus they're super easy to make.

INGREDIENTS

1 1/2 cups sifted all-purpose flour

1/4 teaspoon baking powder

1/4 teaspoon baking soda

1/8 teaspoon salt

2 small lemons

5 tablespoons butter, softened

1/2 cup sugar, plus additional for dusting

1 large egg, separated

1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

2 sheets parchment paper

2 sheets parchment paper

PREPARATION

Whisk flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt in a bowl. Grate zest from 1 lemon directly over another mixing bowl. Squeeze 3 tbsp lemon juice into a third bowl; set aside. Add butter to lemon zest and beat with an electric mixer on medium until combined. Add sugar a little at a time; beat 1 minute. Add yolk (cover egg white with plastic wrap and refrigerate until ready to use) and half the flour mixture; beat on low until just combined. Add lemon juice, vanilla and remaining flour mixture. Beat until just combined.

Form dough into a log about 8 inches long and 2 inches in diameter. Cover tightly in plastic wrap. Refrigerate 3 hours (I was short on time and just stuck in the freezer for 5 minutes, they turned out fine).

Heat oven to 350°. Line 2 baking sheets with parchment paper. Cut dough into 40 thin rounds and place on baking sheets. Whisk egg white with 1/4 tsp water; brush on top of cookies. Dust each with a bit of sugar. Bake 8 to 10 minutes or until edges are golden. (If baking both sheets of cookies at the same time, alternate positions halfway through.) Let cool on baking sheet 5 minutes. Transfer to wire racks to cool completely.

Recipe of the Week: Blackened Tilapia with Suateed Corn and Cherry Tomatoes

I've been making an effort to cook at home more lately and I thought I'd share some of the yummy recipes I've been discovering. This one comes from Fresh Food Fast Weekend Night Meals from Cooking Light. All of the recipes in it are super yummy and super easy (around 5 ingredients or 15 minutes prep time) which is perfect for our busy life.
This recipe originally called for catfish but I couldn't find it fresh the first time I wanted to make it so I substituted tilapia (which is one of my fav fish) and it tastes great! The following makes enough for four people.

Blackened Tilapia

Ingredients

2 tablespoons paprika
1 tablespoon dried oregano
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
1/4 teaspoon ground red pepper
4 (6-ounce) tilapia fillets
2 teaspoons olive oil

Preparation

Combine first 5 ingredients in a small bowl. Sprinkle both sides of fish with the paprika mixture.
Heat oil in a large cast-iron skillet over high heat. Add fish; cook 4 minutes on each side or until fish flakes easily with a fork.

Sauteed Corn and Cherry Tomatoes

Ingredients

2 teaspoons of olive oil
1 garlic clove, minced
2 cups of fresh corn kernels (about 3 ears)
1 cup cherry tomatoes (about 10)
3 tablespoons of chopped green onions (about 2 large)
1 tablespoon of red wine vinegar (originally called for sherry vinegar but I had red wine vinegar in the house and it tastes great)
2 teaspoons of minced fresh thyme

Preparation

Heat oil over medium heat. Add garlic and saute 1 minute before adding corn and tomatoes. Cook for 3 more minutes (or until tender), stirring frequently. Remove from heat and add everything else.

The veggies taste great heaped on top of the fish. It helps keep down the time it takes my cooking the fish and veggies at the same time in different pans.

I love taking a recipe I find and then adjusting it to suit my tastes (or what's in my cupboard). Most of the time it turns out great! What are your favourite weeknight recipes?

What I've Been Up To

It's the end of the week! Yah for Fridays! I thought I'd share a quick recap of my week:

I bought a bike! It's been a while since I've been biking but Vancouver is such a bike friendly city that I wanted to get back into it. I'm looking forward to weekend rides along the water and maybe even riding to work.

*This is not my bike but I wish it was!

A friend of my mom's was in town for work this week and we went out for dinner. We took her to one of our favourite Vancouver restaurants, Burgoo. They have the yummiest soup and stew type recipes. Everything is really fresh and oh-so-comfort foody. I had the Ratatouille but my favourite thing to have there is the French Onion Soup- oh so delish.

We're planning on going kayaking this weekend (suddenly I'm super active!) and I'm excited to get out on the water for the first time this year.

This week has mostly been work though and I'm exhausted from driving all over the Lower Mainland so tonight while E. is out I'm planning on watching Grey Gardens.

I've never seen it (or the original documentary) but it's been on my to watch list for a while.

Friday night is becoming my girly movie night. Last Friday, my friend Charissa and I curled up with a big bowl of popcorn to watch the awesomeness that is Wild Hearts Can't be Broken. We both loved this movie as teenagers/young girls and let me tell you, it did not disappoint!

Did anyone else love this movie?

I have a serious candy addiction (Mike and Ikes, Hot Tamales, Sour Patch Kids, etc, etc) so to try to keep myself from eating candy I've been chewing the new Trident Layers gum. I like this green apple and golden

pineapple the best.

The flavour doesn't last super long but it's definitely got a sweet sugary taste that keeps me from walking over to the convenience store so I'm sold!

Stylish Umbrellas

We're heading into another rainy patch in Vancouver and I've pulled out my trusty umbrella. I buy all my umbrellas from The Umbrella Shop in Vancouver, they make all their umbrellas here in Vancouver and I love that they come with a warranty as I tend to be super hard on my umbrealls- jamming them into my purse and closing the car door on them.

Anyways...this raininess has me noticing all the cute umbrellas people have.

Weekend Adventures: Lighthouse Park

Last weekend we decided to take advantage of the sunshine and head to Lighthouse Park in West Vancouver.

It's a beautiful spot with great old growth trees. We are so blessed to live so close to such beauty.

I'm extra glad we took advantage of the sunshine since this weekend has been rainy and dull so far.

Here's hoping for some sunshine tomorrow!

House Envy

I seriously need to stop watching HGTV. Specifically Property Virgins and House Hunters. Not only is that Property Virgins host getting on my nerves, it is giving me serious house envy. And all that's going to do is give me wrinkles (I not only have house issues but skin worry issues too).

I have always known we would not buy a house for a while. My husband is working on his PhD and that, combined with me being a social worker, does not make for an income that will buy a house in Vancouver. Forget a house, it won't by a condo, unless we are willing to move to deep suburbia (which I'm not).

We also don't know that we are going to be in one place long enough for it a good investment to buy a home even if we wanted to.

Despite all that though, I can't stop wishing the time was now. It's hard to be content sometimes. I love my life, the neighbourhood we live in and the things that not owning a house allows us to do. However, as friends of ours from Ontario keep buying homes and knowing that the market there is so much reasonable it can be easy to start focusing on what we don't have instead of what we do.

So, it's my new goal to focus on contentment and just turn all of my envy into a beautiful dream because I know one day, we will get there, when the timing's right. And when you can let go of the discontent, the dreams are beautiful.

Olympic Maddness

Living in the Olympic host city was crazy and crazy exciting. There was so much going on all the time and I was lucky to get to share it with some friends who came and stayed with us. Here are some of my favourite moments:

Vancouver needs to have nightly fireworks more often. It definitely made my life happier.

I was kind of obssessed with the torch. It's so very pretty. We made no fewer than three visits and I insisted on having my picture taken with every "baby" torch that me saw. I'm pretty sure that "baby torch" isn't the official wording but meh.

We waited in line for EIGHT hours to see these medals. I blame it all on the girl in the red scarf with the iron will. It was pretty amazing to hold them though. But Vancouver, have you ever heard of FastPass? Talk to Disney, they've got it figured out.

Now that the Olympics are over, it's been a bit of let down. I'm calling it the Olympic Hangover. I need more excitement! Apparently, they are opening the bobsleigh and skeleton runs to the public. Hmm..road trip to Whistler anyone?

Spring is Coming!

The weather forecaster's promises of 5 days of sun and warm weather coming my way are combining with daylight saving's time to make me very excited for spring! I can't for sunshine, sandals and sweet dresses like this one from Anthropologie (I pretty much love everything they make). Note to Anthropologie- PLEASE COME TO VANCOUVER!

This dress just feels like spring to me- soft, pretty, floatly. Even it's name- Drifting by Dress. So dreamy. To me, spring is a time for dreams....

Where did I go?

To life. To a crazy fall of moving and swine flu. To a crazy Christmas trip home. To a January spent recovering from said crazy Christmas.

I miss blogging though and I found myself thinking of random blog topics that I would have posted. However, I don't miss the time it took (I have a tendency to obsess and a tendency to perfectionism).

I'm not sure if anyone is out there anymore but I think it's time for me to have a creative outlet again.

I want to give myself permission to let go of having to do it all. I may not post every day or even every week but I do want a place to share things I like and that are on my mind. I may not feel like I have to comment on every blog I like but I still be reading (I still have been reading).

Look out world, here I come.

What I Did This Time

I was all excited for our long weekend and then Saturday night, I did this:

According to the lovely ER doctor I saw I have most likely strained my medial ligament. Mmm hmm. It took him like 10 minutes to get to that conclusion as he was showing me the x-rays and I'm like, the only thing I know about medicine comes from Grey's Anatomy. Unfortunately, he thought I meant the textbook Gray's Anatomy and thought I actually knew what on earth he was talking about. I didn't. Plus, he didn't look a thing like McDreamy. Sadness.

The gist of all this is that posts may be a tad infrequent as I am totally breaking all the rest rules by typing this as I am supposed to stay away from most movement until the end of the week so I don't wind up in physio (that was a super long sentence). Not exactly sure how I'm going to work this week but I'll figure that out tomorrow.

You may be wondering how exactly I managed to strain my ligament (which I still think sounds like such a fake injury). Basically it's just another thing to add to the list of stupid ways I got injuries (last fall I broke my pinkie finger after I tripped UP the stairs at work- yup, I'm that girl). This time, I was getting up off the coach and I was feeling lazy so I put my arms around E's neck so he could pull me up. Apparently, I put too much strain on my elbows and then there was this little pop and excruciating pain. The doctor thinks I almost dislocated my elbow but stopped in time, which then led to an overstretched ligament.

So, that was the end of my long weekend of fun and instead it was a long weeeknd of Gossip Girl! Love it, by the way- mostly for the clothes. E and I also experimented in the kitchen a bit with Julia Child's Mastering the Art of French Cooking which we have been obsessed with since we saw Julie and Julia (such a great movie by the way- you should definitely see it). However, this mostly consisted of me trying to do things and him stopping me and asking if I want to end up with a gimp arm for the rest of my life. We had fun though, pictures to come! I also got to enjoy a fun brunch out catching up with friends which was great so my weekend wasn't all ruined.

My Mexian Musings

We had such a wonderful time on our trip to Mexico. We basically slept, laid on the beach and ate way too much. It was bliss and the perfect way to celebrate our fifth anniversary.

I wanted to share some pictures from our trip with you so here we go:

I am now in love with mojitos- they are perfectly refreshing. I had actually never had one before our trip.

Could not get enough of the yummy seafood.

I am a sucker for a good sunset but unfortunately, since we were in the Riviera Maya on the east side of Mexico there was never a good one. This was the best we ever saw. We were having one last swim and I noticed it and made E. run back to get our camera.

Such beautiful beaches. And thank goodness for those umbrellas...because was it ever HOT!

Of course, with my planning obsession, I was already thinking about our next vacation. My poor husband, all he wanted to do was relax...though we definitely did plenty of that! We're thinking Europe though and I am super excited. However, that is another day. Mexico was wonderful and the perfect break for us.

We'll be back someday...

In Love With Fall (clothes)

I've always enjoyed the fresh start of fall and the smell of changing of leaves. Usually though, my dread of the end of the summer and the beginning of short days robs the joy. This year though I'm excited- for changing leaves, pumpkin muffins (which I already bought the ingredients for) and most of all- fall clothes. Here's a few pieces are my current wish list.

1. Alexsander- Nine West (yes I still want these- I tried it on the other day and am kicking myself for not getting them- going back tomorrow)

6. Banana Republic Top- as seen in InStyle September issue (the colour, the draping- how perfect is it?)

I have been in love with Posietint by Benefit as of late. It may look like Pepto Bismal coming out of the container but it gives my skin and lips the perfect pink flush. Plus, it lasts forever- I hate reapplying.

It was the perfect product when it was really hot as it feels much lighter than my usual lip gloss and cream blush routine.

I have Returned!

No, I didn't decide I loved Mexico so much that I decided not to come back.

Nor have I fallen off the face of the earth.

It's just seemed that way.

Shortly after we returned from our wonderfully relaxing vacation in Mexico, my parents, grandparents and aunt all came for a visit. We had a great time with them but it kept me busy and I haven't been able to return to blogging until now.

However, I am excited to be back and share my vacation pictures, my thoughts about fall fashion, my latest Love Its and everything else that comes tumbling through my brain.

I am also super excited to catch up on all your blogs and start commenting again (I have been lurking in the background this past week- your lovely blogs make for great quick breaks).

I had a super relaxing weekend, curled up on the coach with my hubby, eating takeout and watching Lost (we are in the middle of the fourth season- so intense) and I am really looking forward to getting back to my routine this week- work, the gym and, of course, blogging. I am so glad to be back!

Lookbook: Running Around

I wore this outfit for running some errands and went with flats to protect my poor, often-abused feet.

This is my typical running errands type outfit: jeans, basic top, big bag and a necklace to add some flair. I've been loving this chain necklace from Forever 21 with casual tops as it adds some great detail. Please excuse my hair, which apparently decided to flip out when I took this picture.

Tiffany from I am Style-ish had recommended this jeans and I must say I wasn't disappointed. They are super comfy and there is no droop in the waist that often bugs me with skinny jeans. Plus, as an added bonus, Levis does the hemming for free.

For all those Little Oopses

I have a horrible habit of getting all ready and then finding that I got deordant on my black dress or let some powder fall onto my shirt as I was getting ready. I usually avoid this by not dressing until my hair, makeup, etc is all ready but there are those mornings when you are running around in a rush and don't realize it til it's too late.

I recently saw something called Skid Out sponges from Garment Guard at the InStyle website that I think would be great for those times. Now I have never used these apparently they are designed to wipe away deordant, makeup, toothpaste and the like. I always find that a normal cloth just smears it and that Tide to Go (my normal go to for spills) is not strong enough to get through it so maybe these would be better.

Has anyone tried anything like this. Would you? I absolutely love little gadgets like this!

Lookbook: Working Girl

I like wearing this outfit for work when I want to feel a little polished in my quite casual workplace.

I love how wearing these shoes makes my short legs seem just a bit longer. I would normally wear a long necklace with this outfit but my skins been sensitive of late so I decided to go without it.

The only thing that does bug me about this outfit is the sweater rides up quite easily, as you can see in this picture, and I feel it cuts me at a funny place . Has anyone tried any of that "fashion tape" that's suppossed to keep things in place? I always feel like it wouldn't be strong enough for sweaters. Does anyone have any thoughts on it?

Friday Randomness

Happy Friday Everyone!

I'm super excited because it's a long weekend here and then it's only a four day week until my vacation! This Saturday is also the last day of the Celebration of Light fireworks celebration here so I am excited for that. Our plan is to stake out a spot early on the beach so we can be super close and hear the music that accompanies it. They get huge crowds every year and shut down most of the streets leading in. All the other nights, we have watched from across the bay but we thought it would be fun to be up front for the final night. Plus, since our heat wave is continuing, we will able to keep cool by swimming all day.

I absolutely love fireworks. If E. were to propose to me again, I would want fireworks to be involved. I loved in The Office when Jim (tried to) propose to Pam during the fireworks.

However, sometimes fireworks don't live up to my expectations. When I was a little girl my whole family went to the Canada Day fireworks and I must have fallen asleep before they were over. The next day I talked about how I had loved the finale when they made the shape of a Canadian Flag about of the fireworks.

I talked about this for years and would not believe that I must have dreamed it. I was convinced I had seen this and have been disappointed ever since that this is actually impossible. Oh, childhood dreams.

In other randomness, I am in love with Molly Sims' hair in this picture.

It's the perfect keeping cool hairstyle. I love the headband makes it a little bit chic. Plus, adding it would be the perfect way to keep the tiny strands of my hair that always drive me crazy in place.

Top Five: Hot Hot Heat

It is boiling here this week. Apparently, this is the worst heat wave Vancouver has had in decades and I work and live in a place with no A/C. While I am grateful I have an office job that requires minimal movement and no heavy costume (those poor mascots at theme parks) I feel like I am being roasted alive.

So, here are my top five favourite ways to keep cool:

#1. Popsicles

Who doesn't love the sweet icy treat? My favourite are Del Monte Real Fruit popsicles. The strawberry kiwi ones are delish.

#2. Escape to the Movies

Free A/C and (hopefully) quite entertaining. What more could you want? 500 Days of Summer is on my to watch list right now.

# 3. Slip into a cool sundress

When it's hot, I like to have as few layers as possible. This Anthropologie dress would be perfect for that.

# 4. Take a Dip

There's no better way to cool off than jumping in the nearest pool, lake or ocean. Our keep cool plan for this weekend is to life at the beach so we can hop in the water as often as necessary. We went down to the beach tonight for Vancouver's fireworks competition and it was all I could do to not to jump in my clothes.

# 5. Grocery Shopping

This one may seem a bit odd to you but I love to grocery shop and the grocery store always has guaranteed air conditioning. Plus, it's one thing that you can actually accomplish in the heat (I have way too many to-do list issues, I know).

What are your favourite ways to keep cool? Any good movie suggestions for me?

Bangs?

My hair has been one of the many things that's been on my mind lately. I'm in one of my organize everything moods and this is falling under that. Until this January I had quite long hair. It had actually quite gotten quite out of control as I was growing it out to donate.

Now though it has grown out of the cut I got then and I'm not wanting to go back to being that short. I'm actually considered getting bangs as I grow it out. I used the In Style Virtual Makeover site to try some out. It looks a bit odd but you can get the general idea. What do you think?

My hair is obviously a bit shorter than this right now but I'm thinking...maybe. What do you think? Please help!

I'm finally back! There's been a lot of crazy going on at work and I needed a bit of a break to recharge. Thank you all for your sweet comments and well wishes. I'm so lucky to belong to such a great community. I'm excited to be back and to catch up on all your fabulous posts.

This month was our 5th anniversary. It's hard to believe it's been that long since we got married! To celebrate, we had a lovely lunch at West a great Vancouver restaurant that uses all local ingredients. We had a wonderful afternoon playing hooky together. And of course I was more than happy to use the excuse to dress up a bit!

I got this dress at one of my favourite stores, DLR, where we used to live in Guelph, Ontario. I totally miss going there. They had amazing end of season sales where the longer you waited the more it would get marked down.

We had such a great afternoon and it was a nice bit of relaxation in all the craziness we've both had going on lately.

To make buying each other anniversary gifts a bit more unique, we always follow the "traditional" anniversary gifts. The 5th anniversary is wood so I bought E a wooden spoon and attached a gift certificate for a gourmet cooking class. He's a great cook and he's been wanting to try something new. I'm super excited as we are also in a bit of food rut (lots and lots of salmon) so I'm hoping this will get us trying new things.

He apparently had this elaborate plan that fell threw and ended up buying me jewlery but what girl ever complains about that?

The past week has been pretty crazy for me and as such I've been MIA from the blogosphere. I've been feeling pretty run down after a busy week last week so I've been sleeping a lot. I also got slammed at work this week with meetings which has made for some late nights at work.So, I'm just trying to get my head back in the game, so to speak, and am also taking some time to spend with my friends and darling husband. Soft Feet Treat

I hate wearing socks and love sandals and the combination of the two leaves me with a dry feet and what feels like a never ending search for a foot scrub that actually works.

While, my dears, the search is over. I tried Olay Thermal Pedicure scrub recently and it left my feet just as soft as having a salon pedicure.

Apparently, it contains ground up pumice stone that helps you get your feet smooth without a lot of scrubbing. I also loved that it warms up as you put it on.

Definitely a great product for sandal season, especially if you don't want to shell out regularly for a pedicure. What are your go to feet treats? Anyone have any great recommendations for a good foot cream?

I've avoided shorts like the plague the last view years because they give me all sorts of short leg complexes but I decided it was time to get over it. I find that when I wear them with heels or wedge, it helps the leg from looking as short.

Summer Love

It's been horribly rainy here for the past two years and I'm starting to feel myself flagging under it. I love bright sunny weather and even a good thunderstorm but not the endless gray and dampness. So, to cheer myself up, I decided to make a list of top three favourite things about summer. "Why three?" you ask. Totally my favourite number, not sure why, it just is. So, here they are:

#1 Endless Beach Days

I love lying on the sand, soaking up the sun (which SPF of course) and listening to the water crash against the sand.

#2 Al Fresco Dining

Something about eating outdoors just makes the food taste better.

#3 Summer Dresses and Sandals

I love the light feeling after a bundled up Canadian winter (okay, maybe it's not that bad in Vancouver).

I love this dress from Asos. It's perfectly summery and makes me think of cotton candy!

I am in love with the polka dot trend, it makes me feel so happy. I like how this blouse is muted enough through it's colour that it is a great work staple.

The colours on this were pretty muted so I decided to add some fun with my nail polish. I live Essie's bright pinks and this shade was perfect for the rainy day we were having.

I added some polish with my patent shoes and belt. I've never been a huge fan of patent until recently and these Manolo shoes are such a classic shape that it makes it easier to wear.

Weekend Recap

Hi Lovelies! I hope you all had fabulous, relaxing weekends. Wednesday was Canada Day but instead of taking it off, I decided to work and then take Thursday and Friday instead so I could have a four day weekend. Which, I regretted, when after a day spent fighting with our server, I was grumpy come fireworks time. However, the rest of the weekend was wonderfully relaxing.

On Thursday and Friday I hit the beach and it was gorgeous. Friday, we had lunch at a cafe with great waterfront views and then went sea kayaking, something I have been wanting to try forever but which something always prevents. It was wonderful to be out in the water, you feel so far removed from the city so quickly.

Saturday we went to Bard on the Beach, which is Vancouver's summer Shakespeare festival, preformed in tents with open backs so you have beautiful views of the mountains and water. We saw Othello which was intense. I would totally recommend going if you are ever in Vancouver.

Yesterday, I discovered this fabulous beauty store BeautyMark that carries a lot of brands that are hard to find in Vancouver. I was excited to find that they carried Philosophy and am already loving the Hope in a Jar that I got. It's kind of like a mini Sephora and I could have spent hours there.

It's always hard to head back to work after a long weekend but here's some shoe candy to kick start your week. Aren't these totally fierce? They are Jimmy Choo "Keenan" Caged Sandal and I think I am in love.

Getting Creative: Jewelry Jumble

I always find that I seem to wear the same pieces of jewelry over and over again, neglecting my rather large collection. Whenever I go through my jewelry box, I always wonder why I never wear half of it. The problem was I couldn't SEE half of it, as it all gets buried in the bottom. So, I decided I needed to get in more out into the open and display it on hooks next to my dresser.

Not only did it get my jewelry out into the open it also brightened up very boring white wall. (I really need to move to an apartment where I can paint!)

The hooks are from IKEA. I love all the great organization options they have and could spend hours going through there.

How do you keep all your jewelry stored? Any suggestions for earrings?

I love going out for brunch and Crave, a tiny restuarant in Vancouver's Soma district, is my new favourite.

The back patio is the perfect hidden oasis and the eggs bennys- to. die. for. It was the perfect treat after I finished my first (and possibly only) 5k. I have never been a runner so this was a huge deal for me. Now a foodie, that I have been and will always be.

I like to be able to mix up my favourite pieces lots and find new ways to keep my outfits fresh by mixing up pieces that would supposedly be "work" or "weekend". So this weekend, I was inspired to try my nude pumps with a pair of boyfriend jeans.

I love how they make my legs look longer, something I am always a fan of as I have such short legs.

In the past, I have resisted the brown and black combo but I think with a casual look it can work. This bag was a gift to me from a local craftsman when I visited Zambia and I have always loved it for that though it only recently made it's way out of the back my closet.

Unfortunately, it is so small that my wallet doesn't fit, so I think I am going to have to get a credit card size wallet if I am going to keep using it.

I've been watching old Mary Tyler Moore Show episodes lately (gotta love TV on DVD) and I'm in love with the clothes!

Even though the show was filmed in the 70s a lot of the outfits are things I would still wear today.

I love the nude pumps and the studded belt, I would totally wear this outfit.

The long sweater tunic, the necklace, the great black shoes. Love.

What a great dress. Love the nude pumps again, the pair I just got has barely made it off my feet.

I love the nautical look in summer and there is nothing better for that than a striped shirt. I got this one from H&M a few years ago and it has remained a staple in my summer wardrobe.

I added a belt to cinch my waist so I wouldn't too wide with all the stripes going on.

Some heels dresy it up a bit and I am good to go.

I am getting really sick of my hair. It's at an awkward stage and in desperate need of a cut. I am always so afraid to try a new stylist though and have not found one since we moved to Vancouver (I keep getting my hair done when I go back to Ontario to visit). I think it is definately time to bite the bullet and try someone new though.

I'm also considering Japanese or keritan straightening treatments. Has anyone ever tried one before?

I am definitely loving the one shoulder dresses and tops. I am more of a fan of the tank sleeve style than a full sleeve as it's much more balanced and therefore, much more wearable, in my opinion. Here are some of my favourites that I think would be great for a summer party.

I always have a few pairs of shoes that I'm dreaming of. Here are one's I'm in love with right now.

I have been in love with these Jimmy Choos for ages now. I love the classic style and the cutouts just make me love them more.

Did you hear that Jimmy Choo is apparently doing a line of shoes for H&M? I will definitely be checking that out...if it makes it to Canada...

I like that these Cole Haan shoes would be super comfortable a they have the Nike Air technology in them. They would be a great shoe for travelling (I refuse to wear sweats) and would save my poor feet on the days I am running all over the Lower Mainland for appointments.

These LAMB heels are most recent addition to my "I want it" list. They are a bit different from my usual style but I love the edge they would add to my girly dresses.

Well, I have been MIA for a while now and I apologize for not getting back to all of your sweet comments. I've been pretty exhausted every since my trip back to Ontario for my uncle's funeral. I spent this last weekend sleeping and going to the beach and I am finally feeling like I am back on my game. So, I return to the blogging world! I'm looking forward to catching up on all your blogs and sharing some of the stuff I've been loving lately.

One thing I've been loving is these new nude pumps I bought. They work well with a lot of the dresses and skirts I am loving for summer.

Disney Earth

We went and saw Disney Earth a while ago and it is just full of beautiful vistas and really cute animals. Plus it does get you thinking about we impact our environment but not in an over the top preachy way. Plus, who doesn't love James Earl Jones narrating?

What I love the most was this quote from the end of the movie. "While it can be full of perilous moments, sometimes it's simply, perfection".

Just watching the movie and seeing all the beautiful lands and animals just made me want to travel and see it all for myself and as oppossed to just seeing pictures in a book or in a movie. I think this is one of the best things about a really good film, it can go beyond entertaining us and really make us want to LIVE and experience all there is in our beautiful world. That's waht this movie did for me.

I am a big chip lover and I got really excited when I saw this. You can now create your own Kettle Chip flavour. They send you a kit (complete with inspiration) and you can mix different things to create something new.
I think this would be such a fun party idea or just a fun thing to do during a weekend at home. Check it out here.

Inspiration

When we were in California a couple of weeks ago, we stayed with my husband's grandparents. They used to own an antique shop and his Grandma still had some jewelry from it. She let me pick some pieces and I found these gorgeous brooches. I'm not a big brooch person but I was inspired to make them into necklaces.

I think these pieces would look great on the end of a long chain, similar to this necklace I made previously.

New Shoes!

I always love getting new shoes which I'm sure comes as no surprise given the title of my blog! I've been a bit obsessed with my Prada ballet flats lately but I love it all, high and low. Here are two new pairs that I've gotten lately.

I've been looking for a pair of Gladiator-type sandals that weren't too intense and when I found these at Aldo, they seemed perfect.

I also like that they are a nude (though they do look darker in this picture) as I have short legs and if the ankle strap is dark it can make them look even shorter. These have also spurred me on to make a pedi appointment so my feet are ready to see the full light of day.

These sunny shoes are from the same Joe Fresh grocery store clothing line I mentioned in a post last week. If you live in Canada, I totally recommend checking it out. I love how yellow feels so summery and I've been inspired by blogger Hanako66 and her love of yellow. Check out her posts at Through the Looking Glass...

I don't have the skin tone to pull off a yellow shirt or dress which is why I am in love with these shoes as a perfect way to add the colour without the washed out skin.

Long Weekend: Summertime and the Living is Easy

We had our first long weekend of the summer in Canada this past weekend and I enjoyed every second of it. Great food, great friends and great sunshine!

I have to mention that I was so touched to receive my first award and first tags on Friday! It was the perfect start to my weekend!

And now for the weekend recap:

On Saturday, the hubs and I went for a long walk along the beach and inlet.

It was beautiful and our pasty legs got some much needed sunshine! Note to self: break out the sunless tanner (I have such a fear of skin cancer I refuse to actively tan).

We live in such a beautiful city and I love being able to enjoy it. The pictures aren't the best as they are just from my camera phone but it was a beautiful afternoon.

Sunday, I went for a patio lunch with some girlfriends after church and then my friend Charissa and I wandered down to the beach to soak up the sun. We both live in basement apartments and couldn't bear to go back when it was so beautiful.

The hubs and I also watched a bunch of movies. On Friday, we saw Adventureland (don't see it), Saturday, Frost/Nixon which was very well done and we both enjoyed and on Sunday, Star Trek, which, to my shock, I actually found entertaining. My hubby had been dying to see Star Trek and talked me into going with him and I was surprised when it wasn't just science-fiction kitsch.

We spent Monday relaxing and getting things accomplished around the house that we've been putting off as the weekend always goes so fast. I love checking things off a to-do list! (yes, I am an organizational freak, I can't lie). Here's hoping your week is off to a great start!

I took these pictures (or rather my darling husband did) some time ago as you can probably tell by the rather brown background. It's amazing how quickly things have greened up. It's been a hectic week and I am exhausted so I decided to post these instead of putting something new together. I love this dress though and got tons of wear out of it this fall/winter/early spring as it's so easy to change the look with different accessories. Unfortunately, the material is a bit heavy now that it's getting warmer.

The line this dress is from is actually from a grocery store! One of the mega-grocery stores, Real Canadian Superstore, has a clothing line that is kind of Old Navy-esque and I found the dress there this fall. I love the neckline on it. It definitely has to be worn belted though otherwise it is very sack-like but it is super comfy.

As much as I love trying new restaurants there's always something comforting about your favourites. Mexi Cali is one of my favs and it's just around the corner from our place. It's very caz and kitschy but they have the best Mexican food!

We eat there so much that they know who we are.

My hubs loves the combo plates. SO much food.

They're not big on the presentation but it tastes so good.

This shirt is actually more checks than plaid but I was finding the full on plaid a bit much, hence why I also went with the ruffles.

I'm also loving this new bag. It was part of the Hayden-Harnett collection for Target and I found it on the website in the clearance section before my trip to Cali. I had it shipped to my hubby's there as Target is one of the many US sites that (very frustratingly) will not ship to Canada. So I totally went crazy shipping things before we left.

Sorry for the blogging hiatus. After our crazy fast road trip, I spent most of the past week recuperating. The trip was a lot of fun but went way too fast and involved way too many kilometers in way too short a time. This pictures sum up how the trip went for me: flying by. I'm definately looking forward to a more extended (and relaxing) vacay this summer.

Sweet and Springy

It got cool here this week but I wanted something that felt springy so I decided to go with something with spring colours without freezing. This top always feels like spring to me and it added the right touch to an otherwise plain outfit without getting too summery.

Getting Creative: Necklace Making

I was feeling in need of a low-key creative outlet so I decided to check out the local beading store and make some new necklaces. Here's what I came up with.

I love how the purple brightens it up.

This one feels very girly to me and I love how delicate the pale pink is.

I was a total lover of Barbie as a child and I still am. In honour of her 50th birthday, Town Shoes created these awesome pink shoes that are totally like the ones my Barbie wore.

Blazer Glory

I spent some time shopping Robson Street recently (in the rain of course) as I wanted to find a blazer. I've seen some of my favourite bloggers wearing them in some awesome ways over dresses and with jeans and it inspired me to give it a try.

I love Tiffany over at I am Style.ish and adore the Rag and Bone blazer she's wearing in this lookbook.

I love the Slaves to Fashion blog at Glamour.com and loved how the blazer made the dress a little more caz and can keep you warm (I am always freezing!).

So the hunt was on. After checking nearly every store (and randomly running into an old friend) I finally settled on one of the first ones I tried on (how typical me). It's from Aritzia, a Canadian chain that started right here in Vancouver, gotta love that. I love that it can go over anything and am totally working it as a jacket now that it is getting warmer.

Love It: Colour Block Dresses

In the past year or so I have really gotten back into wearing dresses. I've always loved a feminine style but the dress wearing gave way to jeans and tees in my university days. I love them for their versitility and that it makes getting dressed so easy.

I've been in love with colour block dresses since they are started popping up all over the place this winter. Here are some I'm loving.

I found these first two on LuLu's a site I love for it's cute and cheap clothing.

I could wear this one to my casual work place or dress it up for a night out with the hubs.

This one screams summer to me. I would feel easy and breezy doing my errands or noshing on a patio in this pretty thing.

The following dresses I found on ShopStyle, a site I have been in love with, for it's ability to easily find me tons of options for whatever I am looking for.

I love the pop of pink on this dress. It would totally brighten my mood to look down and see that.

The blue waistband on this dress totally brightens up an otherwise neutral dress and makes you look twice.
